Outpatient Programs at Genesis House consist of Partial Hospitalization (PHP) level of care, Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and/or Out Patient (OP) level of care. All three treatment modalities are live at home and attend sessions at the Genesis House facility. Some individuals may choose to live in a halfway house program and attend our outpatient sessions. Outpatient programs at Genesis House are utilized after one has received treatment at a higher level of care such as Inpatient, Rehab or Residential Treatment. Outpatient care is usually beneficial to people who cannot afford to take time away from their jobs, careers, or family. In the Addictions Treatment field, people who have been in residential treatment but had a relapse to drugs or alcohol will often enter Outpatient Therapy to stabilize their condition. Many health insurers will often not certify an inpatient stay unless the individual has attended Outpatient Treatment and failed at this level. This practice is irresponsible and dangerous for the prospective client. The difference between OP, IOP and PHP is service hours provided to the individual. PHP is usually 18-20 hours of counseling provided to the person per week. IOP is around 9-11 hours per week and OP is 1-3 hours per week. Services means group counseling, individual counseling, educational lectures, and relapse prevention work. There are many micro-modalities within these core elements that are not listed as well. Many people are introduced to the 12 Step Program at Genesis House and it is reiterated throughout patient programs at Genesis House. The team at Genesis believes that alcoholism and drug addiction is a chronic, progressive, potentially fatal disease that, left untreated, will continue to grow worse. Many of the clinicians working at Genesis House are members of 12 Step Programs and personally in the recovery process themselves.
Genesis House’s Goal: The goal of many Outpatient Programs is basically the same: break the cycle of addiction and give the person the tools they need to remain clean and sober! It is important to understand that many cases cannot be handled on an Outpatient basis. The individual’s substance use history, their physical and mental condition and other factors decide the level of care best suited for that person. Before admission is initiated, a highly trained counselor usually conducts a drug and alcohol assessment on the prospective patient. The outcome of this assessment usually indicates what level of care is appropriate for the patient. A higher level (such as residential care) may be warranted.
Highly trained clinicians supervise outpatient programs at Genesis House. All therapists are Masters level clinicians. These programs have the latest counseling innovations and modalities utilized in the industry. The Outpatient program at Genesis allows for more freedom, but at the same time requires that the person is accountable to the program. Outpatient care also teaches relapse prevention and provides information about the disease model of addiction. Personal issues may be discussed on an individual basis with the assigned counselor. Attendance at 12 Step Meetings are mandatory during Outpatient care at Genesis House. Making new friends who are clean and sober, networking, and learning about addiction is a vital aspect of Outpatient Treatment.
Descending Levels of Care: The ideal course of treatment for someone is to begin their treatment phase at the Detox/Residential level of care. Typically, after 30 days of residential care a person is placed in a PHP program to continue their treatment. This PHP phase usually lasts 30-60 days. Following that level, the person drops down to IOP level of care for a short time then on to outpatient therapy (OP) once or twice per week. The beauty of Genesis House’s outpatient programs is that all levels of care are offered. One can receive the full dynamic of care within the scope of the Genesis House program.
