What is Partial Hospitalization Rehab?
Partial hospitalization is a more intensive form of outpatient care. Despite being a step away from residential treatment and inpatient rehab, the program is still quite structured, lasts longer than the alternatives, such as Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), and requires that patients spend more time at the facility each week.
Regardless of its name, partial hospitalization does not actually entail being hospitalized, It just involves spending time at a treatment facility almost every day before returning home.
What Can Partial Hospitalization Do for Patients?
Firstly, PHP provides the same therapies available to patients in residential treatment programs. In terms of Individual therapy, In addition to 1 on 1 sessions that help patients deal with their stress and especially if they have any co-occurring mental health issues, patients can also take advantage of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

In addition to individual therapy, patients can also participate in group therapy. Receiving therapy in an environment of peers, while perhaps intimidating, can be a very powerful source of support. The key benefit of these therapy sessions is understanding that individuals are not alone in their struggles with addiction. This knowledge alone can make it easier for patients to accept their addiction on a deeper level, which makes it easier to focus on treatment.
Besides therapy, addiction education is another important aspect of the work done in PHP. Addiction education involves patients understanding what their triggers are as well as developing methods to cope with these triggers. Furthermore, it involves understanding the chemistry and neuroscience behind addiction.
As such, it may be beneficial for patients to understand how addiction works in order to accept the disease and focus on treatment.
Lastly, among other services, patients can benefit from anger management training offered in PHP. Anger is a common response to coping with unpleasant circumstances. However, this response is also linked to addiction. What’s more, is that anger can get in the way of efficient and effective addiction treatment. As such, it can be incredibly beneficial for patients to undergo anger management training, not just for the sake of bettering their emotional controls, but for improving the effectiveness of their addiction treatment too.
Addiction, much like any disease, can be confusing and demoralizing when one does not understand what is happening to their body.
The Benefits of Partial Hospitalization
Smoothing the Transition Between Stages of Recovery
During PHP, a great deal of focus is placed on helping patients transition back to their lives. Patients can cook, clean, take care of themselves, and live their own lives while still having the ability to rely on a strong system of support.
The same luxurious amenities available to guests of the residential treatment program
The Genesis House is an incredible facility surrounded by lush greenery and top-of-the-line amenities including sports facilities such as basketball and volleyball courts, as well as ping pong tables. Guests can also take advantage of exercise rooms and equipment with access to guided exercise with personal trainers. Finally, a whole host of relaxation amenities such as the pool, poolside chairs, patios, fire pits, and hammocks are also available.
Partial Hospitalization Gives Patients More Free Time
PHP allows patients to receive much-needed treatment while also maintaining their responsibilities, whether it be taking care of their independents, staying caught up with school work and their education, or maintaining their career path and income flow.
Walking away from responsibilities can be a major barrier to many people considering treatment. Those individuals with the appropriate conditions that make Partial Hospitalization an effective form of treatment can benefit greatly from the amount of time saved in this program.
Are You a Candidate for Partial Hospitalization?
The Partial Hospitalization Program is Intended for a specific population of individuals. A population that will still greatly benefit from a structured approach but doesn’t require round-the-clock support and living at a treatment facility.
First, after completing detox and/or a residential treatment program, some individuals would benefit from an outpatient program that allows them to reintegrate with living on their own again. When their risk of relapse is too high or if they feel that they still need the structured approach of a rehab program, partial hospitalization becomes the ideal choice over other outpatient treatment options.
Second, for those patients that don’t necessarily need to enter a residential program or any sort of inpatient rehab, but who will still benefit from some structure, support and rehabilitation treatment, the partial hospitalization program is a clear choice
An important requirement for patients to have in order to partake in a Partial Hospitalization Program is a safe home environment to return to every day after treatment. This entails an environment that is drug-free, where access to certain substances and interactions with individuals that can trigger relapses are highly limited.
In regards to the stability of the patient, they need to be someone who has some sort of personal support system, whether it be their family or friends. They also need to be motivated and dedicated to their recovery.
Such a program of treatment requires self-agency and for patients who cannot dedicate that energy, at least currently, Partial Hospitalization may not be a good choice for treatment.
Lastly, it is highly important that patients don’t have or act on thoughts of self-harm. Patients who are unstable in this regard may be at a risk in a non-residential program. This, of course, also relates to having a personal support system of friends and family.
