Our treatment model has helped numerous people recover from alcoholism and reach their full potential. We provide onsite alcohol detox that will help to cleanse the mind, body, and spirit. As the path to recovery begins, the safety and nurturing environment of Genesis House can be invaluable. For now, let's try to understand the disease of alcoholism better.
What Makes a Person Addicted to Alcohol?
A predisposition, whether it be genetic, psychological, or societal, is all it takes to turn a few drinks into a full-blown progressive disease. Many, although not all, of our clients, suffer from dual diagnosis, meaning that they have an underlying condition in addition to alcoholism. Often, we find that patients who suffer from disorders such as anxiety, depression, or trauma-based conditions will turn to alcohol to feel better about themselves. For example, alcohol might be used to take the edge off after a hard day at work or to help the user feel at ease in social settings, but the user soon becomes dependant on alcohol to function.
The Tolerance Buildup
Why do two drinks turn into ten drinks for the alcoholic? Why do casual drinkers become alcoholics who can't control their drinking? The answer, in part, is tolerance buildup. A couple of drinks to feel less anxiety or stress will no longer do the track after a while. Instead of a couple of drinks, the user will need more and more until the number of drinks has reached a dangerous level. In an attempt to feel okay, the person will reach a point where they cross being drunk and still don't feel the way they want to.
Why is it Important to Get Help?
Chances are, if you or someone you love were able to get stop drinking on their own, the person in question would have stopped by now. Alcoholism is a self-inflicted disease that is out of control in the people it affects. This is the reason why a person who is suffering from alcohol dependency is aware that they have a problem, and that what they are doing is destroying them, but they still can't stop drinking.
Most People Don't Get Well on their Own!
Genesis House has treated many clients with addiction to drugs and alcohol, and we have seen that most people are not able to stop using permanently on their own. They need help. Although there are exceptions to every rule, don't make the mistake of thinking you're the exception to this one. Quitting alcohol is a problematic and massive undertaking.
If you are physically addicted to alcohol, you will need medical supervision during the detox period because you could get sick or even die from withdrawal symptoms. While we never encourage anyone not to quit using alcohol, we don't want you to go cold-turkey either. If you were going to climb Mount Everest, you wouldn't do it alone! Quitting alcohol is an alcoholic's Mount Everest, and you don't have to do it alone!
