A new movement has set its focus on politicians in D.C. to support addiction treatment and recovery efforts. On Sunday, October 4th, a huge rally being held in the nation’s capital is expected to draw tens of thousands of supporters in an effort to provide more resources for ending addiction.
The non-profit organization Facing Addiction Inc. is the behind the event, which is called the UNITE to Face Addiction rally. The following day, 500 citizen advocates will spend the day on Capitol Hill meeting with legislators and their staff to help educate and garner more support for actions such as the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2015.
Sunday’s activities will include guest speakers and musical performances from notables such as Joe Walsh, Steven Tyler, Sheryl Crow and many others.
“When I lost my son, Austin, to addiction, I had no idea this tragedy was happening all over America – and that in our country, a life is lost to addiction every 4 minutes – the equivalent of a jumbo jet falling from the sky every day, with no survivors,” said Jim Hood, co-founder of Facing Addiction. “We know there are solutions to the addiction crisis and it’s time for America to face addiction and exercise the political and social will to act on those solutions.”
With many corporate and other non-profit sponsors and members, this movement seems poised to add a substantial voice to the overall recovery support field. While it may seem like a great finale to National Recovery Month festivities, in reality it is a kick-off to a whole new year-round effort joining the ranks of advocates around the country.
